We just got off the ship in San Diego and we are visiting my family in LA. In May (yes, after 3 months vacation) we are joining the Holland America Zaandam in ALASKA!!! We couldn't be more excited about the ship and location...it is exactly what we requested! Now the only challenge will be finding some cold weather clothes since we've been in the Caribbean for the last two winters.February 22, 2010

Hi, I randomly found your blog when I was looking for something else. :) I've enjoyed reading about all your great adventures. In particularly, I LOVE LOVE LOVE your wedding dress. :) (Which is good, since I'm getting married!)
Aside from that, though, I'm from Alaska and can help with the clothing thing. First... remember LAYERS. I assume you'll be traveling the "Inside Passage" in Southeast? (Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, etc)... if so, you MUST LAYER. Weather changes and can be weird all times of the year. It's also a rain forest, so expect TONS of rain!
If I wear in your shoes, I'd buy some thin, lightweight polypro (www.campmor.com has GREAT deals), to layer underneath for colder days.
Second, get a good rain coat with a hood. Something with Goretex, or another breathable material. Columbia makes some really nice ones that have zip-in and out liners to help keep you warm, too. For non-rainy days, a nice fleece is a good choice. If you can afford it, a windstop one will help on the boat. It'll keep the air next to you warm, even when the wind is blowing.
For pants, I'd get polypro for underneath jeans/khakis/dress pants. Again, a thin layer will help on days where you feel cold.
Layers, layers, layers! Top: Polypro, shirt (I assume you have to wear a polo or something?), fleece, rain jacket. For pants, polypro under jeans/pants. (Not really necessary, but I get cold easily.)
Don't bother with an umbrella... you'll definitely look like a tourist. :)
For shoes... EVERYONE in southeast wears "xtratuf" boots. (Aka, Juneau sneakers!) You can generally fold them down so all you see are the shoe part (and not the calf part), but I'm not sure if you can get away with wearing those in your job. If you can't, remember that your shoes will get wet. A lot. It rains, like, 300 days a year. And it rains SIDEWAYS. There's just no getting around it. So if you can't get away with xtratufs, just remember that your shoes will get wet. I'm not talking, like, saturated down to the socks or anything (unless you're out hiking in the rain), but they'll get dirty. (Aka, don't wear brand new white sneaks!)

(Oh, and you know what we locals say about those who cruise Alaska? It's for the newly-wed or the nearly-dead. Say that to someone and they won't mistake you for a tourist!) :)
